Oblivion – Movie review

This movie is directed by Joseph Kosinski and by telling you that, you will see a lot of the same feel and look he used in other movies. The movie starts off with an intro by Astronaut Jack Harper (Tom Cruise), he gives us info to bring us up to date on his mission, the state of the planet and who he is. He is unsure of who he is and with the limited info that he has he struggles to accept certain aspects of his life. Jack is looking for answers about a dream that he keeps having, he doesn’t know why he has them, but they feel very real to him. He also knows that he has a job to do on the planet and with limited info of what happened there, he still feels like he is a part of the past there.
tom-cruise-in-oblivion-movie-4When watching a sci-fi movie one of the elements that make the movie exciting for me aside from the technology is the visuals, this movie was made for IMAX and the open landscape they used for the film was shot in Iceland because of the terrain needed for the story. Mixed with CGI, the blend of both real and computer world was done in such a great way that visually this movie is amazing.Say what you will about Tom Cruise, he has been busy putting out great movies since his Oprah days, and I hope that we keep getting movies that are edge of your seat and has a story with it. Back to my review.Oblivion-movieJack Harper wanders this planet getting it ready for the eventual exodus of all humans, so he thinks and that my friends is where this movie gets intriguing. He thinks what he is doing is for the sake of the human race and that he will eventually leave the planet to join the rest of the world survivors when his job is done. He is partnered up with Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) that is under the same ideas as he is, she doesn’t have his dreams or thoughts of what if? or where are we from? All she sees is the need to finish their mission and leave that planet. She lives by the book and the rules that were set up for them, not Jack, he is the free thinker and takes risks. I think that is his true nature coming out and creating the conflict he finds himself in while trying to figure out who he really is. Nothing seems right to him and he feels like there is more to this world.
hero_oblivionWe learn of other beings that are on this planet as well who Jack had to encounter in his day to day, his main job is to keep drones flying and operating normal until they leave the planet, and in his duties he is faced with threats from “Scabs” as he calls them. The make it hard for him to do his work sometimes and their in lies a secret that Jack comes to learn some truths about who he is and what he is doing. The music plays a big part in the cinematic vision that we get, remember the part where I mention this movie being an IMAX movie, well the music really makes that comes through and tells an even greater story of the world they are in. I love the music by M83 and Anthony Gonzalez, they captured the feel of movie just right and put it together with the scenes shot in IMAX, Epic!
bring-you-back_largeThe movie has a great cast with Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Truly a movie that needs to be seen with a great ending, I loved the development of the character and the story and all the little things to explain the truth of the story unfolds at the right moments of the movie. In case you missed it this movie tome had a lot of similar pieces that would fit in a Tron movie and I think that is probably the style of the director, I like the visuals I mentioned that in the beginning and everything in this movie was so organized and clean lines everywhere, it truly is a pretty film to watch as well as the story, make sure you watch this movie if you haven’t before, you will not be disappointed.

9.0 Fantastic!

Love watching, talking and writing about movies i've watched. I want to help others sift through critic reviews, so you can watch a movie you may have missed out on because you were misled by a critic.
