Daddy’s Home – Review

Here is a movie that will always be made because they have a winning formula, the kind of movie where they know they can make it for a small budget and will always make their money back and more. Why? I’ll tell you why. The movie features Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, that’s why! This isn’t the first time these two have teamed up for a movie and I think they actually have great on screen chemistry. If you haven’t guess based on the title or the trailer below, this movie is about a step dad and the relationship he has with his step kids as the biological father comes to visit.

daddys-home4I have to admit that the only reason I watched it was for the Ferrell and Wahlberg combo, they play the same part in this movie as they did in their last movie. Go back and watch The Other Guys and you will see what I mean. Will Ferrell plays the perfect dad and husband, he has the perfect job and basically the perfect life. Then there is Mark Wahlberg and the rough and tough dad that everyone wants to be but doesn’t have the confidence or muscles to play the part. Aside from having the perfect family and perfect job, having the tough, take no bull crap from anyone kind of guy would probably be the complete package in a guy. The perfect man doesn’t exists and there is always going to be one or the other and this is not a perfect world, so no perfect men, sorry ladies.

Just when things were going great for Will’s character we get to meet the real dad of the kids and we see the competition begin. Even though Mark plays the confident strong part of the movie, his character also feels threaten that he will lose his kids to the stepdad and needs to fight to get back into their lives. The back and forth is played out very well here and again I go back to the beginning where I mention their chemistry works, they have great timing on their lines and they flow so easy between the two that you buy into their conflict when it happens. You want to root for the step dad, you know how he is with his wife and the stepkids, but at the same time you want to root for the biological dad because I believe in second chances and he would do what it takes for his kids. Throughout the movie there is the classic, “I can do better than you” attitude and the hilarity comes out in their fighting back and forth. One of the best scene of the movie is probably when Mark and Will have a skate off in their backyard, that is all I am saying about it. They have some great moments with a handyman that somehow ends up in their lives and gets treated like a family member and of course it ends how you expect this to end, happily ever after.daddys-home-5417

I love the movie for certain aspects, I wouldn’t say this is a great movie, but it is a movie that if you watched it, you will of had some fun. I would recommend you watch this on a lazy weekend day or if you are sick or if there is nothing to watch on TV. If you need a laugh at stupid one liners, people getting hurt or just random comments that has nothing to do with the movie, this is the one for you. You may disagree with me but if you watch The Other Guys and loved it, you will love this as well and I honestly cannot wait to see another Wahlberg and Ferrell team up movie.

Love watching, talking and writing about movies i've watched. I want to help others sift through critic reviews, so you can watch a movie you may have missed out on because you were misled by a critic.
