The Meg Movie Review will be a fun one. What is the first thing you think of when someone tells you, Jason Statham, a Pre-historicshark, in a movie together? Take a minute and let that soak in (pun intended).

I was wondering, Why? and is this a joke? Has Jason really reached a point in his career where he is taking what ever movie roles come his way? On a couple of those questions, I would say yes and you can decide which. The Meg is another movie about a killer shark that is out to get people who are just trying to have fun in the sun. The cast is actually not bad, there are some good actors to round out the ensemble helping the story move forward. So the meg movie review you are about to read should help clear things up.

The Meg is a movie about the pre-historic shark known as the Megalodon and we are thrown into a world where that shark is no longer just a prehistoric idea, but an actual shark capable of living in our time as well. Jason Statham is one of the few deep sea diver with the expertise needed to rescue a group of researchers trying to prove the existence of sea life at the deepest level of the ocean. The group is introduced to the killing machine of the ocean and we have a shark movie that literally surprised me and wanting to stay to the end of the movie.

Worth sitting through the movie?

The first 10 mins of the movie caught my attention, my wife and I looked at each other and thought the same thing, “not bad”. From that point on we were both at ease about the kind of movie we were about to see. I get to screen movies before they come out to the general public and so I have very little risk of feeling like my money is going to waste. All I end up wasting would be my time. I go to movies like The Meg hoping it is at least enjoyable and even it the plot is ridiculous or over the top, let me have some fun with it. The movie is aware of what story is going to tell and it does a great job blending the impossible with reality and never did I feel like “why am I here” which is a huge thing for a movie like this.

I believe what helped the movie was the cast, and the caliber of acting. I am not going to name every actor in this movie, but needless to say they had a good mix in there to make sure everyone was represented and the stereotypical roles were filled. The leads were represented by of course Jason Statham and the daughter of a wealthy researcher played by Asian actress Bingbing Li. I should mention for you office fans that Rainn Wilson is also a part of the movie playing a rich billionaire. I rather enjoyed his character, I made up my mind about who he was and the kind of person he was, but it kept changing throughout the movie, so in the end I was wrong, fun.

Story and acting saved this moving for sure, but the huge budget the movie was working with really came in handy. Great effects has to be taken into account for as well, not the best but it was well done. The scope of the movie, the sets, it all benefited from the budget which made for a good looking movie as well. I liked the high tech gadgets and base of operation they worked from. They showed off all the new and most expensive toys these researchers get to play with as part of their jobs.

Would I recommend people to watch this movie? I would. I would also recommend you see it on the big IMAX screen, and why not, it’s a huge shark movie with some pretty cool IMAX size chomping scenes. As The Meg Movie Review points out, overall the movie works for what it is and I had a good time.  I don’t see any major awards being taken home, but maybe a sequel?

Love watching, talking and writing about movies i've watched. I want to help others sift through critic reviews, so you can watch a movie you may have missed out on because you were misled by a critic.
