Point Break (2015) – Movie Review

0

Lately, Hollywood is in this funk where they cannot come up with an original movie idea and have to resort to remakes. Is the well really gone dry for these writers? The guys writing these scripts coming up with blank pages or they really think that they can make an older movie better? What ever the reason, this remake revolution needs to stop and stop right away. The most recent movie that has fallen into this hole is the 1991 “Point break” who starred Keanu Reeves and the late Patrick Swayze. That movie did not have to be remade, why would you need to?point-breakThe latest version has the same characters played by Luke Bracey (Johnny Utah) and Edgar Ramirez (Bodhi) taking the lead roles of the movie.Interesting side note about Luke, he played Cobra Commander in the Sequel to G.I. Joe with The Rock. The movie starts off with us getting to know Utah and how he ends up in the FBI and ultimately involved with the gang of thrill seekers that are in a crime spree while doing these extreme stunts for their getaway. The movie starts with some high intense action and when they are not showing us the fun stuff, the movie seems to drag for me, and it has nothing to do with the story, more of how the story is being delivered by the actors. I can’t seem to buy into the main guys, like Utah and Bodhi they are supposed to build this bond with each other and I never got that. They do build up their relationship and Bodhi does buy into what Utah is there for and believes that he wants the same thing that Bodhi and his gang are after. If you know the original story or you have seen any of the Fast and the Furious movies that is what this movie is.

The things I liked about the movie are the sky diving, base jumping, wing suits, snowboarding, surfer and all the stuff the trailer sold me on wanting to watch the movie, I didn’t care to watch it because it was a remake, but I love watching these extreme sports being done knowing I can’t do them or want to, I don’t have a death wish. I do enjoy watching it and glad that others will do that for my enjoyment, but not me. For me the movie was one big YouTube extravaganza of these extreme sports being put on display with a story intermixed being told by guys that probably should not be lead actors trying to be these death seekers.18-041915-point_break_workoutThat is the part that I had a hard time with, they didn’t fit the people they were trying to be, they are these fearless, adrenaline junkies, living in this high pace world and I didn’t believe them. What bothered me as well were Utah’s tattoo’s, he had these body tattoo’s and those seemed to fake for me as well, I am no tattoo expert, but his just felt out of place. The whole time I just kept thinking, these guys are trying to hard to be cool, extreme or that they belonged in that world. I will be the first one to tell you that acting is not as big for me many times if the rest of the movie works, because I am still entertained about something with the movie, but I couldn’t avoid that here.point-break1Like I mentioned earlier, when they were not on screen trying to move the main story along for us, why Utah went under cover or why the “bad guys” are doing what they do with these crimes. The rest of the movie was fine, because I, like everyone else, enjoy watching extreme sports online. Sure the stunts were great they looked real and that is a huge improvement from the original movie, but this movie was not worth my time. I actually had to stop watching it because it was boring me when they were not jumping off stuff. I felt like jumping off my balcony at times. I finally started the movie back on and finished so I can write this review and no it didn’t get any better for me, I love action movie, I love extreme sports, why can’t I love this movie? Why?!

If you want to see extreme sports watch it on YouTube, they will show you the fun stuff. If you want to see it in this movie, just have your fast forward button ready to skip over the actual movie. I am going to do a YouTube video review of this as well to explain my frustration, I had high hopes for this even though it was a remake which I don’t agree with. This is not going to be on my 2GO Pick, but rather on my Don’t Bother. Imagine that

Summary

High flying action scenes that fall flat on their faces when it came to the actual movie. Fun stunts, great stunts, crappy story and acting.

6.0 Heart Break

Love watching, talking and writing about movies i've watched. I want to help others sift through critic reviews, so you can watch a movie you may have missed out on because you were misled by a critic.
